What Is a Demat Account, and How Does It Actually Work?

Where your shares live, who holds them, and what the depository, the participant and the broker each do.

A demat account holds your securities in electronic form, the way a bank account holds money. When you buy shares, they are credited to it; when you sell, they are debited. Nothing is printed, posted or stored in a locker.

Three parties, three jobs

People often use “broker” and “demat” interchangeably. They are different roles, and knowing which is which helps when something needs fixing.

  • The depository — NSDL or CDSL — keeps the master electronic record of who owns what.
  • The Depository Participant (DP) is your point of contact with the depository. Urja Investment is a DP with NSDL (DP ID IN305111).
  • The stock broker places your buy and sell orders on the exchange. With Urja the broker and the DP are the same firm, so one relationship covers both.

What happens when you buy a share

  1. You place an order through the app, the desktop terminal or the dealing desk.
  2. The exchange matches it with a seller and the trade is confirmed.
  3. On settlement day the clearing corporation delivers the shares and they are credited to the demat account in your name.
  4. You receive a contract note from the broker and a transaction alert from the depository.

What you can hold in it

Not just listed shares. Exchange-traded funds, bonds, sovereign gold bonds, government securities and mutual fund units in demat form can sit in the same account, and IPO allotments are credited there directly.

Things worth setting up on day one

  • A nominee. SEBI asks every holder to nominate or formally opt out.
  • Your own login to the depository’s investor portal, so you can see holdings independently of any broker app.
  • Correct bank details, since dividends and redemption proceeds are paid to the linked account.

Moving from another broker

You do not have to sell to switch. Holdings can be transferred from one demat account to another — between depositories too — and your cost records should be carried across for tax purposes. The desk can walk you through the form.
