Eight Habits That Keep Your Trading Account Safe
Most account problems are preventable. A short checklist drawn from the regulator’s own advisories.

Exchanges, depositories and SEBI publish investor advisories for a reason: the same handful of mistakes cause most losses that are not market losses. None of these habits takes more than a few minutes.
- Keep your own mobile number and email on the account — never an agent’s or a relative’s. Alerts from the exchange and NSDL go there.
- Read the SMS and email alerts. They arrive the same day as the transaction.
- Never share your password, OTP or TPIN with anyone, including someone claiming to be from the broker.
- Do not sign blank delivery instruction slips or give anyone a general power of attorney over your demat account.
- Transfer funds only from your own bank account to the broker’s designated client bank account. Never to an individual.
- Check your ledger and holdings statement regularly against your own records.
- Be sceptical of tips, assured-return schemes and unsolicited calls or messages. No SEBI-registered broker can promise returns.
- Add a nominee, and keep KYC details current.
Where to escalate
Start with the broker’s customer care, then the compliance officer. If it remains unresolved, SEBI’s SCORES portal and the Smart ODR platform are the formal routes. Links to both are in the footer of every page of this site.
